Vintage Jewelry Gift Giving Guide

As the biggest shopping season of the year approaches, you may be starting your holiday gift buying list.  When it comes to holiday gift giving, my goal is to find something unique and special that won’t be found at the mall or popular online shops.  It may not seem like an obvious choice yet vintage jewelry is the perfect gift for anyone you would purchase ‘jewelry’ for.  In this post I’ll outline why you should gift vintage jewelry and provide some gift giving ideas.

You may be asking what exactly is vintage jewelry?  Although there are many definitions, what I am referring to is often called vintage costume jewelry.  This is jewelry dates from the 40s thru the 90s and is constructed with faux stones, crystals & rhinestone and plated metals.  Costume jewelry was popularized by Coco Chanel who famously stated, “Costume jewelry is not made to give women the aura of wealth, but to make them beautiful.”  Vintage costume jewelry, just like today’s fashion jewelry, was produced by many different manufactures with diverse designs and price points so there is something for everyone.  In addition, vintage jewelry is generally of good quality (sometimes even triple plated) with much of it made in the United States.  Not only will you be giving a sustainable gift, yet one with a unique story making it truly special.

Don’t know where to purchase vintage jewelry?  Check out Instagram, Pinterest, Etsy or search online for vintage jewelry.  There are many online shopping options, making purchasing easy and convenient.

When buying vintage jewelry, always verify the condition of the piece.  Check for missing stones, excessive wear and make sure all clasps function.  If buying online, examine pictures and ask questions.  It’s been my experience that sellers of vintage jewelry are passionate about sharing their love of vintage and more than willing to assist you.

Now the fun part – here are my picks for everyone on your gift giving list!

For the fashionista on your list, consider bold statement pieces by Givenchy or Kenneth Jay Lane.  You’ll find timeless designs that are easy to style into today’s modern wardrobe.  For more ideas, click the image to view Chic Glamour Signature Style vintage jewelry.

Beaded necklaces, dangle earrings and copper jewelry are perfect for the bohemian on your list.   Renoir-Matisse created jewelry from the 40s to mid-60s in copper which is collectible today.   For more ideas, click the image to view Bohemian Artisan Signature Style vintage jewelry.

For the romantic on your list consider pearls, dainty chains and brooches. Bows, hearts and florals add feminine touches.   For more ideas, click the image to view Romantic Heirloom Signature Style vintage jewelry.

Look for gold chains and monogram inspired jewelry for the classic women on your list.  Anne Klein, Napier and Monet are known for their chains with many unique and classic designs.  Vintage chains are great options for layering.   For more ideas, click the image to view Classic Simplicity Signature Style vintage jewelry.
